Areas of Practice

Employee BenefitS

We represent pension, welfare, vacation, apprenticeship, 401(k), labor-management cooperative committees and other types of joint labor-management funds throughout the Midwest. Depending on the needs of the individual fund, our Practical Programs assist the trustees in their compliance with the increasingly intricate provisions of ERISA and other federal laws. We prosecute and defend a large volume of cases on behalf of our clients in state and federal courts, ranging from the collection of contributions to complex fiduciary liability cases. We practice before the Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service, and assist funds in obtaining qualification and in dealings with these regulatory agencies.

Labor

We represent private and public sector unions throughout the Midwest before the federal and state courts.  We prosecute and defend unfair labor practice and representation cases before the National Labor Relations Board and state administrative bodies.  We represent unions before arbitration to protect their contractual benefits and protect their members from improper discipline.  We also assist our union clients in attaining their goals in organizing campaigns.  Our accomplishments have earned us the respect of our adversaries in every forum in which we practice. Our Practical Programs are particularly successful in assisting our union clients to reach their organizational objectives.

Employment Law

We recognize that our clients are employers, too. We aggressively defend our labor union and fund clients against all types of discrimination, wage and hour, and wrongful discharge claims. Our goal is to protect our clients against expensive employment litigation and liability through ongoing communication to keep up with their ever-changing needs. Through our Practical Programs, we provide training emphasizing effective communication including the drafting and updating of personnel manuals, anti-discrimination seminars, and consistent implementation of employer policies. We also provide immediate assistance to our clients when a potential or actual claim of employment discrimination or wrongful employment practice arises. We explore all options and creative approaches to provide the most cost-effective and appropriate defense possible.
